You don’t have to be around the lake point long during summertime before you recognize our very own Lake of the Woods Waterski Club out there doing their thing. Founded 30 years ago, the LOW Ski Club is as active as ever. Primarily a youth organization, the club now has about 50 skiers ranging in age from 7 to 18, with total numbers continuing to grow each year. The impressive charter of the organization is to “Teach children life skills relating to athletics, sportsmanship, exercise, health, fitness, and team dynamics, competition, and water safety.”
From beginners to advanced skiers, these young people work very hard practicing and perfecting their skills, jumps, and tricks. During the season, they dazzle us with 2 major ski shows every year. They help us commemorate America’s birthday at the LOW 4th of July Celebration, and then present a final show on Labor Day which wraps up the official ski season. After the formal season has ended they will continue to have “fun” ski days for a few more weekends until the weather turns cooler and they have to hang up their skis and ropes for another season.
While these skiers work hard, there is a group of adult volunteers who work almost at hard. These parents and friends of the club donate their time, protective vigilance and the use of personal boats during practice and shows. And these shows never fail to entertain. With colorful costumes, exciting formations and fun themes and music, they strive to include every skier and bring a wonderful production. If you haven’t seen them perform, it’s a must see!
