The Town of Orange Police Department has sent out an alert about a new or uprise on phone scams. In the newest scam to hit the area individuals reported that they are receiving phone calls where the caller ID contact shows up as being their own cellphone. Upon answering personal information such as social security number is sought after. This is more than likely a spoofing program that is calling all of the numbers in a certain prefix (e.g., (540) 729-XXXX); and either connects the recipient to a scammer if they pick up, or plays a recorded message for the person to call back. Please remember never to give out any personal information over the phone. Do not answer any call that is not from a familiar number and report any suspicious calls to authorities.
